Creating Pathways for People With Disabilities

History and Philosophy

Picture
Summit Support Services is a private, non-profit corporation formed in 1977 as 'Ashe County Group Homes' to provide residential services to adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities in a group home setting.

The organization has enjoyed steady growth and now operates two group homes (the Lighthouse and the Ark), an apartment program (the Bridge Apartments), a successful day program (Summit Training and Education Program or S.T.E.P.) and supports people with disabilities living interdependently in the community or with their families.

The governing Board of Directors is made up of interested citizens and representatives from various service agencies in the community.

Our philosophy of gentle teaching has played an important role in the stability and development of the organization. The emphasis we place on the abilities of people whom we support creates opportunities for them to excel and to give something back to the community.

CQL Accreditation

Summit Support Services has been nationally accredited since 2003 by the Council on Accreditation (COA) of Services for Families and Children, Inc. In 2023, Summit changed accreditation to the Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL), Quality Assurances Accreditation.

CQL | The Council on Quality and Leadership is an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to the definition, promotion, measurement, and improvement of personal and community quality of life for people with disabilities, people with mental health diagnoses and older adults. CQL provides accreditation, training, certification, research and consultation services for human service organizations and governmental systems.

Since 1969, CQL has demonstrated international leadership in developing progressive measures and indicators of quality in services and supports, personal quality of life outcome measures and measures of social capital. Through planning meetings, self-assessments, interviews, site visits, focus groups, stakeholder events, data analysis, and ongoing partnership, organizations can continually improve the quality of supports and the quality of life for people receiving those supports.

Each time we go through the process of re-accreditation, we improve our listening proficiency of the people we support.  This enables us to expand our knowledge and explore new ideas.
